Is Coffee Good for your Gut?

There is not a drink more fitting to take on the Monday morning blues than a warm cup of fresh coffee. Picture your favourite mug as it releases a rich aroma. The first sip delivers a satisfying taste that alerts your senses. If you are a coffee lover like me you will be pleased to know that research suggests that moderate coffee intake, may increase gut bacteria diversity. It may also encourage beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium while reducing harmful Enterobacteria.

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can stimulate digestion, increase stomach secretions, and encourage bowel movements, which may help with constipation.

However, drinking large amounts of coffee may make problems worse such as acid reflux, some bowel symptoms, and periodontal disease, and coffee can also affect the absorption of nutrients such as iron, calcium, zinc, and B vitamins, as well as interact with certain medications.

Overall, a fair amount of coffee intake a day (less than four cups a day) may have positive effects on gut health and the bowels, but the evidence is sometimes conflicting and more research is needed to fully understand these effects.
